Sophomore Mairead Scanlon decided for her project in Creative Writing Class to write profiles of English Language Learners at MHS. This project showcases her commitment to hard work and more importantly highlights her interest in providing her peers with a sense of belonging. “She is to be commended for coming up with such a unique idea,” said Mrs. Testa, “and for enriching the MHS community about our ELL population.”

There are already many challenges that high school students face, but for students who come from other countries with other languages these challenges are even greater. The English Language Learner Program at Manchester High often becomes a significant part of their lives, helping them adapt to new ways while also celebrating their culture. Talking to ELLs exposed me to new cultures and made me realize how much these rich ethnic backgrounds can contribute to our school community. Creating this project and interviewing ELL students has motivated me to learn more about the ELL program throughout my upcoming high school years and beyond.
